The SAF vs MILF misencounter happened on January 25, 2015, this tragic incident left forty-four PNP-Special Action Force members killed and twelve others wounded. This “Oplan Exodus” objective is to capture Zulkifli bin Hir, alias “Marwan,” a Malaysian terrorist either dead or alive. Marwan is hiding at Tukanalipao village in Mamasapano town, Maguindanao a Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) territory. However, Because the PNP- Special Action force does not trust these MILF, they choose not to cooperate with them. Without coordination with the military and the MILF, which are observing a truce following the signing of a peace agreement between the Moro rebels and the government last year, the policemen walked naked into unsecured territory.
The three hundred ninety-two special action force commandos were separated and placed into their positions at three o’clock a.m. on Sunday, and their operation will only last for thirty minutes. The target of this operation is the four nipa huts in the village. PNP-SAF was able to enter the nipa hut around four o’clock a.m. where Marwan was sleeping. Unfortunately, Marwan woke up around four thirty a.m. and managed to fight back with the PNP-SAF. The exchange of gunfire between PNP-SAF and Marwan brought his security to action. When these policemen were planning to escape after neutralizing Marwan, The MILF came out thinking that their territory is being attacked by an enemy because, they did not know that there are a police operation on going.
